German Stegmaier
Drawings and Paintings - May 11 until June 08, 2013

However his reductions are in fact very different from the frigid abstractions of mathematicians or physicists: instead of quoting formulas or conducting purely technical experiments, the works are complex intellectual models, devising and substaining autonomous aesthetic systems as possible analogies to, or slightly out-of-kilter equivalents of, the real world. The particular character of Stegmaier´s patient efforts to „draw“ such analogies, involving a total absorption in the act of seeing which at the same time reflects the highest possible degree of transparency, is perhaps best summed up by Robert Musil in The Man Without Qualities: “But it is a sense of possible reality, and it reaches its goal far more slowly than the sense that most people have of their real possibilities.“
(Michael Semff)
